Finding the Perfect Backer Rod

September 11, 2017

It’s normal for buildings and other structures to have cracks, but it’s unexpected to live with the cracks unfixed. Irrespective of the cause of the crack, you need to have it fixed with the best materials. Ideally, various construction materials can be used for sealing the cracks, but only effective soft backer rods can penetrate the most intricate parts of the crack, offering 100 per cent sealing.

Here are some tips to help you select the right backer rods in sealing the cracks in your structures.

Diameter of the rod

Backer rods are crafted with differing diameters, all aimed at making your outcomes great. Your choice of the right diameter of the rod should be primarily guided by the size of the crack being sealed. This allows for optimal fitting of the soft backer rod into the crack without expanding it further, or fixing an excessively small rod onto it.

Size of the crack

Large cracks call for use of longer and possibly wider backer rods. This allows for effective fitting of the rod into the cracks. For excellent results, longer and wider rods are recommended. When selected, these rods should be pressed into the cracks with the aim of making them sap into the crack with no room for any visible gaps on the wall.

Availability and type of accompanying sealant

Soft backer rods should be used in the company of suitable sealants. These are chemical formulations that glue the rod onto the surface being sealed. More viscous and high skid sealants are recommended when dealing with larger rods in sealing small cracks. This is important as it allows for perfect sliding of the rod into the crack with minimal resistance.
